Pet Fire Safety Tips
July 15, 2023

Today, July 16th, is Pet Fire Safety Day. This may not be the most pleasant topic, but it is an important one. Our animal companions are inquisitive, active, and playful. These traits are definitely adorable, but they can also backfire in unwanted ways. It’s very important for pet owners to not only recognize pet-related fire hazards, but know how to minimize the potential risks. A local Oradell, NJ vet goes over some key information about this below.

Gas Burners

Do you have a gas stove and a larger-than-life pup? Fido may be a bit too enthusiastic about the delicious meals being cooked on that stove. He’s also rather clumsy. We’d recommend adding child-proof burner knobs, so your canine buddy can’t accidentally turn the stove on if he bumps into it.

Candles

Candles are another risk to be aware of. They’re a very common cause of house fires. With pets, there is a risk of your furry pal knocking a candle over, or perhaps getting too close and getting their tail caught. Always keep candles in thick holders, and burn them in spots that Fido and Fluffy can’t reach. Or, better yet, go with battery-operated candles. You’ll still get that cozy glow, but without the risk.

Dishes

Do you have a fenced yard for your furry friend to play in? That’s great! Of course, Fido and Fluffy will need water outside. That leads us to one of the lesser-known risks: glass bowls. Because of the way these conduct sunlight, clear glass bowls can start fires on wooden decks.

Wires

Many of our furry patients like to chew things. With smaller animals, like rabbits and Guinea pigs, this is a given. However, Fluffy and Fido also sometimes nibble on things. Needless to say, a pet chewing through a live wire poses a significant fire risk. Use taste deterrents and protective coverings on wires you can’t move out of paws’ reach. It’s also important to provide lots of suitable chew toys, so your pet won’t go looking for more.

Fireplaces

If you have a fireplace or fire pit, you’ll also need to keep your animal companion away from those flames. Use grates or covers to keep Fido and Fluffy at a safe distance.
