Walk Your Dog Day is coming up on . February may not seem like the best time to take Fido for a walk. However, your pet does need exercise, even—and especially—in the middle of winter. A local vet offers some tips on walking your pet in winter below.
Visibility
Although the days are starting to get longer, it’s still getting dark early. We recommend getting Fido a harness or leash that is reflective. You may also want to wear light or reflective jackets yourself.
Footing
This is one of the bigger concerns when it comes to walking your dog at this time of year. Wear shoes or boots with good tread. Your pet’s paws will also need some extra attention. Use paw balm or wax to protect and moisturize his paw pads, and keep up with his nail care. Fido will have a hard time getting traction with overgrown claws.
Jackets
If your canine buddy has thin fur, he’ll need a jacket or sweater to keep him warm. Make sure that your pup’s clothing fits him well, and doesn’t interfere with his vision or movement. It’s actually a good idea to have two or three outfits for Fido. That way, if one is wet or dirty, he’ll still have something to wear.
Terrain
Snow can hide potential dangers, such as broken glass and other hazards. It can also conceal holes and bumps that could trip you and/or your pet. Keep a close eye on the ground, and try to stick to paved paths.
De-Icer
Snow, salt, sand, and chemical de-icers often contain toxins. These are rough on dogs’ paws, and can make your pet very sick if he were to ingest them. Opt for pet-safe products on your driveway. If you mostly walk your pooch on public sidewalks, take time to wipe his paws down before you bring him inside.
Indoor Exercise
There will be plenty of days where neither you or your pooch want to dally outdoors. Keep Fido fit and active by playing with him indoors. You can play Fetch inside, assuming you have enough room.
